Wow! I really am not a big music person, so there was history of this song I didn’t know! First, I didn’t know that Gary Glitter originally wrote this song. That should automatically get an inclusion on this site (uh-hem!). It went to number 2 in the UK charts in 1973.
Then Joan Jett performed it in 1980 because she really like it. It went to number 20 in the US Chart.
In 2008, Hewlett-Packard (“HP”), the computer company, wanted to use Jett’s version of “Do You Wanna Touch Me” as the background song in a commercial about the new Touch Screen HP All-in-One computer. The commercial aired at the first of October, 2008, and by the end of the month, had been pulled around the world.
Glitter was set to received more than 100,000 pounds ($164,000USD) for royalties, but many groups petitioned HP to donate the money to child abuse charities. Many of the original pages are gone, but I did find an archive version here.
Knowing that Glitter was eventually convicted for Pedophilia (or for the English, Paedophilia), makes the lyrics “Every girl an’ boy needs a little joy” a little too obvious.
The television hit “Glee”, also included the song in one of their episodes titled “Sexy” about adolescent sexuality. The complaints began to fly in from child abuse charities but the network remained strong. Although they didn’t tell the complainers to “fuck off, it is only a song”, they did stand behind the decision to air the episode:
Charities dedicated to serving and helping children have filed complaints to Fox and the producers of Glee. Television executives in the UK, where the episode was to be broadcast about a month later than in the US, were rumored to be considering the removal of the scene entirely. However, a spokesperson for Channel 4 stated that the episode would air in full, and explained: “The scene is editorially justified within the programme and we do not seek to censor material in the proper context.”

We have really come too far in this country where special-interest groups can get songs pulled from production because of the name of the person who wrote it. <RANT OFF>
“Do You Wanna Touch Me”
We’ve been here too long tryin’ to get along
Pretendin’ that you’re oh, so shy
I’m a natural ma’am doin’ all I can
My temperature is runnin’ high
Cry at night no one in sight
An’ we got so much to share
Talking’s fine if you got the time
But I ain’t got the time to spare, yeah
Do you wanna touch?
(Yeah)
Do you wanna touch?
(Yeah)
Do you wanna touch me there, where?
Do you wanna touch?
(Yeah)
Do you wanna touch?
(Yeah)
Do you wanna touch me there, where, there, yeah?
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Every girl an’ boy needs a little joy
All you do is sit an’ stare
Beggin’ on my knees baby, won’t you please?
Run your fingers through my hair
My, my, my whiskey and rye
Don’t it make you feel so fine
Right or wrong don’t it turn you on
Can’t you see we’re wastin’ time, yeah?
Do you wanna touch?
(Yeah)
Do you wanna touch?
(Yeah)
Do you wanna touch me there, where?
Do you wanna touch?
(Yeah)
Do you wanna touch?
(Yeah)
Do you wanna touch me there, where, there, yeah?
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Do you wanna touch?
(Yeah)
Do you wanna touch me there?
Do you wanna touch?
(Yeah)
Do you wanna touch me there, there, yeah?
My, my, my do you wanna touch me there?
Touch you, touch me touch, everybody
You touch me, you know where, there
Oh yeah, oh, yeah
